US coach Klinsmann gets another shot at Italy

(AP) ? Jurgen Klinsmann still has bad memories of playing Italy.

The U.S. coach lost to eventual champion Italy in the semifinals of the 2006 World Cup when he was coach of Germany, and the former Inter Milan striker knows the Americans will have their hands full against the Italians in an exhibition game Wednesday.

"It's true that I've never won against Italy," Klinsmann said. "I've lost in both matches as coach and that makes you understand that to beat the Azzurri you need to give more than 100 percent.

"I remember the World Cup semifinal. Losing that game was really hard to get over. We were playing at home dreaming of winning the World Cup," Klinsmann added. "To beat Italy you need to score first or else they'll kill you, you can't stay calm against them."

The U.S. is on a three-match winning streak, and this is the first time Klinsmann will be able to call on his top players since November's 3-2 victory over Slovenia. The Americans defeated Venezuela and Panama while playing with a backup squad.

Klinsmann is not interested in easy victories ahead of his team's opening qualifier against Antigua and Barbuda. Instead, he wants games that will provide a more realistic picture of the squad. After Italy, the Americans host Scotland and Brazil in May.

"For me every game is a new adventure," Klinsmann said. "The Americans are proud to be playing against a national side such as Italy. We want to always show everyone that we know our worth on the pitch and they shouldn't underestimate us."

The U.S., however, will be without Landon Donovan for the game in Genoa. He withdrew Sunday because he is ill and will miss the chance to play with Clint Dempsey for the first time since Klinsmann was hired as coach last year. Also out is Jermaine Jones with a strained right calf.

The two have been replaced by Sasha Kljestan and Brek Shea.

Italy also has personnel problems, especially up front where it is missing injured forwards Giuseppe Rossi and Antonio Cassano. Also, Manchester City striker Mario Balotelli has been left of the squad because of his fiery temper and unpredictability.

However, with Antonio Di Natale ? who scored his 18th league goal of the season Sunday for Udinese ? around, Klinsmann knows the Italians still have plenty of firepower.

"I really like Cesare Prandelli's Italy side," Klinsmann said. "Watching the last few games, I've really liked the attack, where there are amazing players and they press really well."

Roma striker Pablo Osvaldo has also fallen out with Prandelli and he was left out the squad after being sent off for violent conduct in the 4-1 loss at Atalanta ? something the Italy coach says led him to call up to Osvaldo's teammate, Fabio Borini, for the first time.

"We were following him, but without the omission of his Roma teammate he would have had to wait for another time," Prandelli said. "It's time to stop this type of football, made up of off-the-ball fights. All it is is a sign of weakness. And in any case my footballers know it: Whoever spits or reacts can't be in the national team. If they don't clean up their acts, they risk missing out on the Euros."

Obama honors achievements in arts, humanities - Entertainment ...

WASHINGTON ? President Barack Obama on Monday honored several artists, writers and organizations for their contributions to the nation, and pledged to make the arts and humanities a priority for as long as he is in the White House.

Obama bestowed eight National Medal of Arts and nine National Humanities Medals during a ceremony in the White House East Room. Among this year's recipients were actor Al Pacino, poet Rita Dove and the United Service Organization, which holds performances for American service members stationed around the world.

Before awarding the medals, Obama said the arts have the power to bring together people of different backgrounds and beliefs. And he urged the honorees to help mentor a new generation of artists and scholars, saying their role in the nation's future would be equally as important as the next generation of engineers and scientists.

"The arts and humanities do not just reflect America, they shape America," Obama said. "As long as I'm president, I look forward to making sure they are a priority for this country."

Others receiving arts medals:

- Will Barnet, painter, printmaker and teacher.

- Emily Rauh Pulitzer, curator, art collector and philanthropist.

- Martin Puryear, sculptor.

- Mel Tillis, singer-songwriter.

- Andre Watts, pianist and teacher.

Receiving medals for the humanities:

- Kwame Anthony Appiah, philosopher and novelist.

Authorities: Houston was underwater in tub (AP)

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. ? Whitney Houston was underwater and apparently unconscious when she was pulled from a Beverly Hills hotel bathtub, and she had prescription drugs in her room, authorities said Monday.

The regal pop star's family made arrangements to fly her body home to New Jersey for a funeral at the end of the week.

Authorities said that there were no indications of foul play and no obvious signs of trauma on Houston's body but that it could be weeks before the coroner's office completes toxicology tests to establish the cause of death. The 48-year-old singer had struggled for years with cocaine, marijuana and pills, and her behavior had become erratic.

Houston was found underwater Saturday at the Beverly Hilton Hotel by a member of her staff about 3:30 p.m., hours before she was supposed to appear at a pre-Grammy Awards gala, police Lt. Mark Rosen said. She was pulled from the tub by members of her staff, and hotel security was promptly notified, Rosen said. She was pronounced dead about a half-hour later.

"As of right now, it's not a criminal investigation," Rosen said, refusing to release further details. "We have concluded our portion of the investigation at the hotel."

Los Angeles coroner's assistant chief Ed Winter said there were bottles of prescription medicine in the room. He would not give details except to say: "There weren't a lot of prescription bottles. You probably have just as many prescription bottles in your medicine cabinet."

The coroner's office released the body to the family late Monday morning. Two people who spoke with Houston's family said the singer would be taken to New Jersey. The two, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to speak for the family, said Houston's family raised the possibility of a wake Thursday and a funeral Friday at Newark's Prudential Center, an arena that can seat about 18,000.

Houston was born in Newark and raised in nearby East Orange. She began singing as a child at Newark's New Hope Baptist Church, where her mother, Grammy-winning gospel singer Cissy Houston, led the music program for many years.

The White House said President Barack Obama's thoughts and prayers were with Houston's family, especially her daughter. Press secretary Jay Carney paid tribute to the singer's "immense talent" and called it a tragedy to lose somebody so gifted at such a young age.

Houston's death is a sad rewind of what befell Michael Jackson and Amy Winehouse. It took three months for a London coroner to rule that Winehouse drank herself to death last July. A powerful anesthetic was quickly linked to Jackson's June 2009 death. Three months ago, Jackson's doctor was convicted of involuntary manslaughter.

Houston's death tinged the Grammy ceremonies with sadness. It also probably boosted viewership, which was 50 percent higher than last year, with nearly 40 million viewers tuning in to the program on CBS.

A sensation from her first album, Houston was one of the world's best-selling artists from the mid-1980s to the late 1990s, turning out such hits as "I Wanna Dance With Somebody," "How Will I Know," "The Greatest Love of All" and "I Will Always Love You." But as she struggled with drugs, her majestic voice became raspy, and she couldn't hit the high notes.

Mourners left flowers, balloons and candles at the wrought-iron fence around the tall brick Newark church where she got her start. It sits near an abandoned housing project and the train line leading to New York City.

"She was an inspiration to everybody," said Gregory Hanks, an actor who grew up in the neighborhood and who dropped off a bouquet. He saw Houston perform in New Jersey years ago.

"I grew up listening to her as a little boy, and to hear her sing, you knew she was special," he said.

Samuel L. Jackson Voted For Obama "Because He's Black"

Samuel L. Jackson is making news for some candid remarks about President Barack Obama and why he supported him in 2008. What did the actor say exactly?

That he pulled the lever for Obama because of his race.

In an interview with Ebony, Jackson said, "I voted for Barack because he's black. 'Cuz that's why other folks vote for other people, because they look like them ... That's American politics, pure and simple. [Obama's] message didn't mean [bleep] to me."

Samuel L. Jackson ImagePresident Obama Photo

Jackson then went on to drop the n-word many times discussing Obama, telling the magazine, "When it comes down to it, they wouldn't have elected a [bleep]."

"Because ... what's a [bleep]? A [bleep] is scary. Obama ain't scary at all. [Bleeps] don't have beers at the White House. [Bleeps] don't let some white dude, while you in the middle of a speech, call [him] a liar," he said, referring to Joe Wilson's famous outburst.

"A [bleep] would've stopped right there and said, ‘Who the f--k said that?' I hope Obama gets scary in the next four years, 'cuz he ain't gotta worry about getting re-elected."

There you go. The only thing missing is a Snakes on a Plane reference.

Provocative word choice aside, Jackson's point appears to be that some people vote based on race, and that Obama won because while he is black, he does not fit negative African-American stereotypes. For more on the subject, see Rock, Chris.

The story of us: Lady Gaga and RedOne (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? Producer RedOne says his goal in music was to "find the next Madonna or Britney (Spears)." Then he met an unsigned artist named Lady Gaga.

The Morroco-born RedOne said he had been producing for 20 years and wanted his big break in America. He wasn't interested in working with an unknown act, but went to the studio to meet the now-famous pop star.

Fast forward four years later, the two acts are multiple Grammy winners, and up for more awards at Sunday's show.

Lady Gaga's latest album, "Born This Way," is nominated for album of the year. It's the singer's third album, and third nomination for the top Grammy prize.

"She knows a lot about music," said RedOne, born Nadir Khayat. "And we connected musically."

RedOne was just one of the hit songwriters on the BMI panel called "How I Wrote That Song" on Saturday at the Key Club in Los Angeles. He produced four songs on Lady Gaga's latest album, including the Top 10 hit "Judas." But it was "Just Dance" and "Poker Face" ? both No. 1 hits ? that set the tone for RedOne, who has also lived in Sweden.

"I had this feeling that something was there," RedOne said backstage before the event. "I've learned that anything is possible when you trust each other." The panel also included Rev Run of Run DMC, Benji and Joel Madden of Good Charlotte, RZA of Wu-Tang Clan and hip-hop producer DJ Khaled, whose hit "I'm On One" with Lil Wayne, Drake and Rick Ross is nominated for best rap/sung collaboration at the Grammys.

RedOne, who also produced hits like Jennifer Lopez's "On the Floor" and Enrique Iglesias' "I Like It," is currently working on Nicki Minaj's sophomore album.

"It's a new sound for Nicki," he said. "It's her (on) the next level. You're going to love it."

Kelley Tuthill Five Years Later | Boston Bakes for Breast Cancer

I don?t ever think I will forget the day I heard five years ago that Kelley Tuthill a TV reporter on WCVB in Boston was diagnosed with breast cancer.? As a reporter Kelley was in my home all the time and now to hear Kelley, a young mother, wife and daughter was fighting breast cancer was a shock.?? But I am sure it was more of a shock to her and her family but it was a shock to the Boston Community as well.

What was more amazing to me was that Kelley chose to share your story as she was undergoing treatment.? Cameras were with her to share Kelley?s Story every step of the way.? This is only a part of what makes Kelley the amazing woman she is but an inspiration to so many.? She helped more women than she could ever imagine by taking what many keep as private and make it as public as possible.? Kelley indeed made a difference in the lives of many ? those she knew and those she would never meet.

But after Kelley?s treatment was over, Kelley did not stop being a breast cancer advocate and supporter.? Kelley never took a back seat to helping others.? This is where I had the opportunity to meet Kelley and see Kelley every year before the start of Boston Bakes for Breast Cancer! Kelley visits the clinics at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute with Tim Fonseca, Executive Pastry Chef from the Four Seasons Hotel Boston where they share Tim?s famous chocolate chip cookies before the start of our event.? Kelley and Tim distribute cookies and talk with the patients, their families, the doctors, nurses and staff.? It is one of my favorite things to do before Boston Bakes.? It brings Boston Bakes back home to Dana-Farber and makes our mission on raising money for breast cancer research more important when you see the faces of those fighting breast cancers with all that they have.? Sharing a cookie with Kelley and Tim for one day makes a difference.

I thought I was the lucky one for Kelley giving us her time each year to do this but this year I found out Kelley looks forward to this as much as I do!? I must admit that was a wow moment for me something I surely was not expecting to hear!? It is a very special day for us and Kelley talks to so many people when we are at the clinic. It never fails that she always meets someone she knows.

Kelley is also an author and her book You Can Do This!: Surviving Breast Cancer Without Losing Your Sanity or Your Style is a must read!

Kelley, here is to your health and happiness!? Thank you for all you do for breast cancer.? I look forward to seeing you next May when we once again visit the clinics at Dana-Farber with chocolate chip cookies in hand for our tradition of kicking off Boston Bakes for Breast Cancer.

On Monday, February 13th, watch News Center 5 at 11 PM to see an update on Kelley?s Story. Additional stories will continue during the week starting on Tuesday on News Center 5 at 5 PM.

Harvard's Voluntary Tax Spurs Ailing Providence to Press Brown ...

February 08, 2012, 12:08 PM EST

By Michael McDonald

Feb. 8 (Bloomberg) ? Brown University, the Ivy League school whose endowment grew to $2.5 billion last year, may boost voluntary tax payments to Providence, Rhode Island, after the city said it was nearing bankruptcy.

Governor Lincoln Chafee last week intervened to restart talks over the university?s so-called payments in lieu of taxes after Mayor Angel Taveras, 41, said Providence was about to run out of cash. While Brown is tax exempt, it has been paying more than $1 million a year since 2003 to help compensate for public services it uses. In May, Taveras sought a $5 million increase.

Providence is seeking to emulate Boston, which is on pace to raise collections in lieu of taxes from Harvard University and other institutions by 25 percent to about $19 million this year, city documents show. Mayor Thomas M. Menino is trying to double the number of schools, hospitals and cultural institutions that pay by pressing more than 20 that gave nothing last year.

?The issue is how do we move beyond where we are and do something that is good for the city but not crippling for the university,? Ruth Simmons, Brown?s president, said Jan. 23 in her campus office. ?Five million dollars ? that?s at the level of being crippling for the university and it?s completely out of scale with what universities do.?

Talks Continue

Officials are ?continuing discussions with the mayor at this time and hope for a constructive and fair solution,? Marisa Quinn, a Brown spokeswoman, said yesterday by e-mail.

Harvard, the world?s richest university, makes voluntary payments to local governments and also pays some property taxes, according to Lauren Marshall, a spokeswoman. Last year, it paid a combined $21.3 million to Boston and Cambridge, Massachusetts, where it?s based, as well as to neighboring Watertown, she said.

Since charities are exempt from most state taxes, lawmakers from Palo Alto, California, to Pittsburgh have turned to alternative levies and fees as colleges, hospitals, and other nonprofits expand, increasing demands for public services. More than 100 communities in 18 states have collected payments in lieu of taxes since 2000, according to a report from the Lincoln Institute of Land Policy, a nonprofit group in Cambridge.

?There are a lot of state Supreme Court decisions that have upheld the exemption? from taxation for nonprofits, said Evelyn Brody, a professor at the Chicago-Kent College of Law. ?That?s why the negotiations have shifted to the case-by-case basis for voluntary payments.?

Difficult Straits

In Rhode Island, municipalities are struggling as the economy trails the national recovery. Central Falls, its smallest city, entered bankruptcy in August after being overwhelmed by pension costs. In East Providence, the state took fiscal control in November following persistent deficits.

Taveras, a Democrat, has closed public schools, renegotiated union contracts, and lifted property taxes in an attempt to bridge a $110 million gap in Providence?s budget. Last week he said Rhode Island?s capital city is still short and called on nonprofits to contribute more money and for the state to give him the authority to suspend cost-of-living increases for retirees, a change adopted for state pensioners in 2011.

?The fiscal storm we?re facing is real and it?s still strong,? Taveras, a graduate of Harvard and of Georgetown University?s law school, said last month in an interview.

Nonprofit organizations such as Brown own more than half the land in Providence, with 41 percent of the assessed value, city figures show. Taveras says the city of 178,000 spends about $36 million a year on services for its largest tax-exempt institutions.

20-Year Accord

In 2003, Brown and three others ? Rhode Island School of Design, Providence College and Johnson & Wales University ? agreed to contribute at least $48.5 million to Providence in annual installments through 2023. The city will get $1.9 million this year. They also agreed to pay property taxes on new buildings, which will mean $2.3 million from Brown this year.

Brown, started in 1764 and one of eight Ivy League schools along with Harvard, owns more than 200 properties in the city, with a value of more than $1 billion, according to the mayor?s office. Most of the holdings are in the historic College Hill section near downtown.

Taveras set a goal in his budget of collecting $9 million of the voluntary payments in fiscal 2012, which ends June 30. He met with Simmons in May to ask if Brown would increase its contribution by $5 million. Last month he rejected an offer from the university for $2 million a year for five years to be used for public schools, plus a promise to keep talking about more in connection with downtown development plans.

Sharing Burdens

?I feel that our taxpayers have already borne a huge burden,? Taveras said. ?Everyone needs to be part of this. No one is exempt. We?ve tried to be consistent with respect to institutions so everyone sees there is some rhyme or reason for it. We believe that Brown taking the lead can help us with the others.?

David Ortiz, a Taveras spokesman, declined to comment on the status of the negotiations with Brown. He said the city is seeking increased contributions from all four schools that agreed to voluntary payments in 2003 as well as three hospitals.

Taveras said last month that barring a deal, he?ll seek legislative authority to force nonprofit organizations to make payments in lieu of taxes. He also wants the state to increase local aid in recognition of the services the city provides while permitting him to levy property taxes when nonprofits start for- profit ventures. Governments in Connecticut and Massachusetts have that power.

Local Aid Cut

While Rhode Island has reduced local aid, it still gives money to some municipalities to offset the cost of nonprofits, allocating $23.1 million to Providence in August, Ortiz said.

Even with recent endowment gains, Brown is still recovering from steep investment losses in 2009, said Simmons, who became the school?s leader in 2001 and at 66 years old is stepping down this year. The university also deserves credit for proceeding with capital projects and holding down job cuts through the financial crisis, she said.

The school has more than 8,000 students this year and in 2009 employed almost 4,500 people in Rhode Island, according to its website. The school was the state?s sixth-largest private employer that year, with an estimated economic output of $660 million. The university said it spent $65 million with local vendors for goods and services in 2009, supporting 690 jobs.

The Corporation of Brown University, the 54-member board that oversees the school and includes Bank of America Corp. Chief Executive Officer Brian Moynihan, meets later this week. Quinn, the spokeswoman, said yesterday there is no expectation the group will approve any additional payments because there is no proposal yet for them to consider.

?It was never our intention to not keep moving toward a solution,? Simmons said last month. ?We really have to think about what?s reasonable.?

Bustamante, who admitted stabbing, strangling and slitting the throat of a young neighbor girl, wrote in her journal on the night of the killing that it was an "ahmazing" and "pretty enjoyable" experience ? then headed off to church with a laugh. The words written by Bustamante were read aloud in court Monday, Feb. 6, 2012, as part of a sentencing hearing to determine whether she should get life in prison or something less for the October 2009 murder of her neighbor, 9-year-old Elizabeth Olten, in a small town west of Jefferson City. (AP Photo/Kelley McCall, Pool, File)

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) ? A Missouri teenager who had described the slaying of a young neighbor girl as an "ahmazing" thrill made an emotional apology Wednesday to the girl's family and was sentenced to a potential lifetime in prison.

Moments before her sentence was imposed, 18-year-old Alyssa Bustamante rose from her chair ? with shackles linking her ankles and holding her hands to her waist ? and turned to face the family of 9-year-old Elizabeth Olten, whom she confessed to killing in October 2009.

"I really am extremely, very sorry for everything. I know words," she said, pausing to take a deep breath and struggling to compose herself, "can never be enough, and they can never adequately describe how horribly I feel for all of this."

She later added: "If I could give my life to get her back I would. I'm sorry."

Elizabeth's mother, Patty Preiss, who on the first day of Bustamante's sentencing hearing called her an "evil monster" and declared "I hate her," sat silently, staring forward as Bustamante's finished her apology.

Cole County Circuit Judge Pat Joyce then sentenced Bustamante to the maximum possible sentence for second-degree murder ? life in prison with the possibility of parole. She ordered the teenager to serve a consecutive 30-year term for armed criminal action, a charge resulting from her use of a knife to slit the throat and stab Elizabeth after she had strangled her into unconsciousness.

Elizabeth's family declined to comment about the sentencing, as did Bustamante's family.

There were no immediate indications that Bustamante planned to appeal the sentence.

Bustamante originally had been charged with first-degree murder but pleaded guilty last month to the lesser charges to avoid a trial and the possibility of spending her life in an adult prison with no chance of release.

Bustamante was 15 years old at the time of Elizabeth's murder in the small town of St. Martins, just west of Jefferson City. Evidence presented during her hearing revealed that Bustamante had dug a shallow grave in the woods several days in advance, then used her younger sister to lure Elizabeth out of her home with an invitation to play. Bustamante, who had hidden a knife in a backpack, said she had a surprise for Elizabeth in the forest. The surprise turned out to be her demise.

During her two-day sentencing hearing, prosecutors referred repeatedly to an entry Bustamante wrote in her journal on Oct. 21, 2009 ? the night of Elizabeth's death ? in which she admitted to having just killed someone.

"I strangled them and slit their throat and stabbed them now they're dead," Bustamante wrote in her diary, which was read in court by a handwriting expert. "I don't know how to feel atm. It was ahmazing. As soon as you get over the 'ohmygawd I can't do this' feeling, it's pretty enjoyable. I'm kinda nervous and shaky though right now. Kay, I gotta go to church now...lol."

Bustamante then left for a youth dance at a Mormon church her family attended while hundreds of volunteers began a two-day hunt for the dead girl. Although she initially lied to authorities about Elizabeth's whereabouts, Bustamante eventually confessed to police and led them to Elizabeth's leaf-covered shallow grave.

Defenses attorneys had argued for leniency after presenting evidence from family members and mental health experts about Bustamante's troubled childhood. Bustamante was born to teenage, drug-abusing parents; her father was imprisoned and her mother abandoned her, leaving her in the legal custody of her grandmother.

After a suicide attempt on Labor Day 2007 as she was starting eighth grade, Bustamante was prescribed the antidepressant Prozac. Her dosage had been increased just two weeks before Elizabeth's death. A defense psychiatrist testified that the medication could have made Bustamante moodier and more violent and contributed to the murder ? a theory rejected by a different psychiatrist testifying for prosecutors.

Charlie Moreland, one of Bustamante's attorneys, described the sentence imposed Wednesday as "a harsh punishment."

"This was a child who had been spiraling out of control, but has treatable conditions," Moreland said.

Under Missouri guidelines, Bustamante would have to serve 35 years and 5 months in prison before she is eligible for parole, said Department of Corrections spokesman Chris Cline. It's also possible that the more than two years Bustamante spent in jail while awaiting her sentencing could be counted toward that time.

After spending several weeks at a diagnostic prison, Bustamante could be placed in either one of Missouri's two female prisons or sent out of state. Cline said department officials also would evaluate whether Bustamante should be kept separate from other adult woman inmates.
