Highlighting the proud history of the Grand Cherokee, Jack Rodencal, Managing Director of Chrysler Group Middle East, said, "There have been four generations of Grand Cherokee, and over the last 20 years each generation has improved on the last. For the 2014 model year, Jeep has taken the industry's most highly acclaimed SUV and elevated it to an even higher level. The 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee has now leapt even further ahead from its competitors by enhancing its unique elegance, efficiency, capability and technological features."
Jack Rodencal added, "Styled for, and targeted at customers in the important mid-size SUV segment and with a high level of equipment on offer, drivers in the Sultanate will find it even more of a pleasure to drive - on road, off road and in all weather conditions."
A new, refined exterior design, complete with new bi-xenon headlamps, with signature LED daytime running lamps (DRL) on all models add to its premium appearance. Interior luxury is achieved with premium amenities including Natura leather, exotic open-pore wood trim and new colour offerings. New steering wheel paddle shifters offer improved driver control both on- and off-road, including Electronic Range Select when using Selec-Speed Control in extreme off-road situations.
Legendary Jeep capability comes courtesy of two available 4x4 systems (Quadra-Trac II and Quadra Drive II), Jeep's Quadra-Lift air suspension system and class-leading Selec-Terrain traction management system. The 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee also boasts best-in-class towing of up to 3,266 kgs.
The new 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee comes equipped with increased and improved safety and security features - more than 60 in total - including Front Park Assist, Forward Collision Warning with Crash Mitigation, Adaptive Cruise Control and Selec-Speed Control - as well as an array of advanced user-friendly technology features such as the latest Uconnect 8.4" touchscreen radio with integrated climate and infotainment controls and a 7" customer configurable multiview display cluster.
The Jeep Grand Cherokee is equipped with the 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 engine as well as the 5.7-litre HEMI V8 - both engine options being paired to a new eight-speed transmission.
The new, robust and durable eight-speed transmission in addition to enhancing fuel economy, delivers quicker acceleration and precise, smooth shifting, enhancing ride quality to luxury car levels. An additional benefit is a lower crawl ratio to aid in climbing over - or through - tough obstacles, when equipped with a two-speed transfer case.
Another contributor to the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee's improved fuel economy is a new Eco Mode that optimises the transmission's shift schedule and, in V8 models, Fuel Saver cylinder deactivation. In addition, the Eco Mode activates Grand Cherokee's air suspension system, lowering it to 'Aero Ride Height' when the vehicle speed remains between 83.7 kmph and 90 kmph, or exceeds 90 kmph. Eco Mode is automatically engaged on vehicle startup - a button on the centre stack that allows drivers to disengage Eco Mode if more spirited performance is desired.
The new 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee is available now at Dhofar Automotive showrooms across the Sultanate. To find out more about all Jeep Grand Cherokee models or to book a test drive - call 2458 4530 or visit your nearest showroom from Saturday to Thursday, between 9.30am and 1.30pm or 8pm and 12am during the month of Ramadan.

It's a point that's been raised by many people in arguments about privacy and other aspects of government data collection. In a speech given last Friday, the general counsel for the Director of National Intelligence, Robert Litt, broached the topic publicly. After defending the NSA's programs as completely legal (thanks to the Third Party Doctrine), Litt asked more directly:
"Why is it that people are willing to expose large quantities of information to private parties but don't want the Government to have the same information?"It's a valid question, but not when asked by the overseer of government intelligence agencies. Daniel Stuckey at Motherboard points out that there's a big difference between voluntary and involuntary "exposure."
Now, I'd hate to answer Litt's question so simply by saying that consumers are extorted by their love of what they consume, but it's part of it. And trust in companies that give us free things, that advance self-expression is an inalienable consumer right. If the government, theoretically, already knows everything there is to know?when we didn't directly volunteer our information?it then provides momentum for a rally cry. The shame and disgust when Edward Snowden pulled back the curtain reverberates that government by virtue is supposed to be more clear, more holistic, and an idealized reflection of ourselves. It's a false equivalent. Thousands of people expose tons of information every day using social media platforms, but they do so with the implicit understanding that the free service is deriving some sort of benefit from their interactions. When the government scoops up the same data, there's no perceived benefit, not even the supposed "targeting" of terrorists.
Furthermore, as Stuckey states, we want to believe our government is above snooping on our "private" interactions. (Private in the sense that they're between individuals, no matter how many others can view or interact with the conversations.) If we initiate the exchange, we don't feel victimized by the lack of privacy.
Beyond that, every social media service has some sort of privacy settings built in that limit what others can see. Most of these have only limited effectiveness, but the fact is that users have the option to exclude others. The underlying platform is the facilitator and therefore, has "earned" the "right" to mine data and can never truly be excluded, and we (for the most part) accept this. There is no "exclude government" option, other than Litt's implicit suggestion: if you don't want the government to see it, don't post it in public arenas.
But the most troubling part of Litt's question is this.
It's great that the U.S. government behaves better than corporations on privacy?too bad it trusts/subcontracts corporations to deal with that privacy?but it's an uncomfortable thing to even be in a position of having to compare the two. This is the point Litt misses, and it's not a fine one. This is the crux of the issue. When someone asks why we don't value our privacy more, in terms of social networking, they have a point. When someone asks why we're willing to give Facebook plenty of data but resent the government doing the same thing, the point is no longer valid. Handing data to advertisers is a lot easier to stomach than the impression that the government is reading over your shoulder.
Ultimately, though, we should never have gotten to the point where the government's thirst for data on American citizens exceeds the demands of corporations. We expect corporations to act in self-interest. We expect our government to be a lot more selfless and its intelligence agencies more willing to sacrifice some effectiveness in order to protect the rights of American citizens.
If Litt honestly feels people don't have privacy expectations in regards to data shared with a third party, he should put some manpower into launching Facebook.gov (or whatever) and see how many people are willing to sign up. Facebook vs. government isn't a fair comparison and Litt knows it. He's just using the question to prop up the third party exception that enables the NSA to acquire vast amounts of data. What he's doing is making a convenient presumption that these users are aware of the protections they lose by sharing information with a third party -- and, consequently, the government. Part of the "expectation of privacy" is the "expectation," something the Supreme Court has noted, and it's safe to say that many Facebook/Google/Twitter users don't expect the government to be accessing their data.
Finally, there's also the utilitarian aspect. As the New Jersey Supreme Court pointed out earlier, no one uses a cell phone simply to provide location data for law enforcement and investigative agencies. And no one utilizes social media in order to provide the government with a treasure trove of personal information.

For those that we have lost in the battle for justice, wherever that fits in any part of the world ? we can?t bring them back. What we can do is we can let our voices be heard. And we can vote in our various countries throughout the world for change and equality for everybody. That?s what I know we can do.
I know I am not everybody. I am just a human being but for the gift God has has given me and what it means, I decided today that until the ?Stand Your Ground? law is abolished in Florida, I will never perform there again. As a matter of fact, wherever I find that law exists, I will not perform in that state or in that part of the world.
According to a source close to Stevie Wonder, it appears that several other artists are ready to join him in his protest. This morning that source told the American Urban Radio Network that artists including The Rolling Stones, Rihanna, Jay Z, Madonna and Justin Timberlake would be joining Mr. Wonder in bidding adieu to the Sunshine State so long as Stand Your Ground Laws remain intact.
The initial act in itself garnered wide attention with Slate calling it ?politically savvy? and ?morally righteous? acknowledging that that his actions harken back to similar efforts made by artists like Ray Charles, Sam Cooke and The Beatles in the face of a Jim Crowe south.
If true, this massive showing of solidarity is likely to gain notice from both fans and policymakers in the state.? Whether or not that impacts Governor Rick Scott is still up in the air.
Last week the Governor did take time to meet with The Dream Defenders, a group of young activists of color who literally took over his office on behalf of Justice for Trayvon Martin, to discuss their demand to have a special session called to reevaluate Stand Your Ground Laws.? Upon meeting with the young protesters, the Governor reiterated his refusal to do so which prompted them to pledge to maintain their sit-in until their demands have been met.
While Florida is not the only state to maintain Stand Your Ground Laws, for the time being it appears to be ground zero for where this battle is fought.? Moving something substantive forward will require participation from everyone who has a stake.? While these artists are sure to up the ante, the visible presence of The Dream Defenders in Governor Scott?s office is just as invaluable.
The point being that you don?t need to sell out Yankee Stadium to do something ? it helps! ? but Florida is becoming a test case for what happens when a movement finds agreement with society?s cultural icons.
The power in that is yet to be seen.
Till then, I?ll have Florida on my mind.

Sophisticated overnight attacks on two Iraqi prisons on the outskirts of Baghdad involving mortars, rocket-propelled grenades, and dozens of attackers are a sign of growing potency for the country's Sunni insurgents.
These weren't attacks on mosques or markets, designed to spread terror by killing unprepared civilians in public spaces. These were attacks on the militarized prisons of Abu Ghraib and Taji, both of which have large contingents of insurgents among their inmates and have long been targets for Iraq's jihadis. Yet the government of Shiite Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki was forced to scramble attack helicopters and rush troops to join pitched battles. Even so, they may not have staved off a stunning symbolic defeat.
Though early today government officials claimed the attackers had been kept from their ultimate objective ? freeing jihadi comrades ? as the day wore on scattered claims were made of a stunning insurgent success. Member of Parliament Hakim al-Zamili asserted to Reuters that 500 insurgents escaped from Abu Ghraib alone and that most of them were members of the Al Qaeda-aligned Islamic State in Iraq.
RECOMMENDED: Sunni and Shiite Islam: Do you know the difference? Take our quiz.
Iraq's al-Summaria TV also reported that hundreds of Al Qaeda fighters escaped from Abu Ghraib and Taji, citing an unnamed police source, and went on to say that many of them were from Saladin Province, which lies between the insurgent hotbed of Anbar and the increasingly troubled province of Mosul due to its border with Syria. But TV stations frequently get stories wrong when relying on unnamed sources. And Mr. Zamili, as a loyalist of Shiite preacher and Maliki opponent Muqtada al-Sadr, would have reasons to favor a story that embarrasses the prime minister.
Whether this was a total disaster or just the latest in a series of black eyes for the government remains to be seen, as is the death toll. Early reports claim that 20 soldiers and policemen died in the jailbreak and that roughly that many of the prisoners were killed. How many of the insurgent assault forces died has yet to be determined.
But what's already clear is light infantry attacks involving a large number of insurgents and weapons, that must have been long planned, were carried out against government forces on the outskirts of Baghdad, the seat of central government power. Iraq's sectarian civil war in some ways never really ended, US protestations that the "surge" brought peace to Iraq to the contrary. The Shiite dominated government has behaved autocratically, clamped down on freedom of speech, continued the tradition of torture in Iraq's prisons and police stations, and cut Sunni Arabs out of the political process.
Not surprisingly some of the Sunni Arabs who were promised a seat at the table in the "new Iraq" but have instead been systematically marginalized are taking up arms again. Lately they've been given heart by Sunni jihadi successes across the border in Syria (where Bashar al-Assad is allied with Shiite Iran and enjoys at least the tepid support of the Maliki government), with Iraqi jihadis from Anbar and other border provinces playing a prominent role in the Jabhat al-Nusra insurgent group, and those returning home reinvigorating their comrades.
AFP statistics show that 527 Iraqis died in insurgent violence this month through July 20 and there have been at least 100 further killed in the two days since, making July the deadliest month of the year ? and the deadliest month in Iraq since June 2008. The previous deadliest month in Iraq since June 2008 was this May.
While Sunni jihadis frequently execute prisoners and prey on defenseless civilians for either working with the government or simply being Shiites, an attack on Abu Ghraib carries powerful symbolism for Iraq's Sunni community in general.
The prison there was a house of horrors under Saddam Hussein, where political opponents (most Shiite but many Sunnis as well) were tortured before their execution. The disfigured body of a loved one returned to a community formed a powerful disincentive to standing in his way. After Hussein was deposed by US-led forces in 2003, Abu Ghraib's administration came into the hands of the US army, which in turn carried out torture on inmates, many of them Sunnis accused of being insurgents.
Pictures of the torture conducted by US guards leaked out and in 2004, and indelibly stained America's reputation in the country and much of the region. Abu Ghraib was long ago returned to Iraq's government, but succeeding Iraqi governments have made torture far more widespread and routine than it was when the US was running the country. While the worst abuses under Maliki's rule have taken place in secret prisons co-located with Iraqi army bases and Interior Ministry facilities, Abu Ghraib remains a symbol of central government abuse. And the ongoing torture fuels Iraq's separation and violence, rather than quelling it.
Iraq remains a long way from the worst of the civil war. The vast majority of Iraqis who lived through it don't want to return to that horror. But the war in Syria has seen Iraq's already limited control of that long border slip and government failures like that today ? which potentially saw hundreds of seasoned operatives re-injected into the Iraqi insurgency ? will encourage more Sunni fence-sitters to join the fight.

A quiet revolution has begun taking place in the United States that is going to have a profound impact on the global energy landscape for years and decades to come. I call it a quiet revolution because, while many people have heard of this revolution, very few people have actually mapped out the implications or the far-reaching impact it will have in a relatively short period of time on the global energy matrix. I'm talking about the shale oil and shale gas technological revolution.
As I've written in the past, politicians aspiring to higher office in energy-consuming countries always make energy independence one of the pillars of their campaigns. And for good reason: As the common saying goes, voters vote with their checkbooks.
Since one of the biggest items that voters take out of their checkbook every month is energy-related (whether it's gasoline for the car or heating fuel for the house), politicians want to reduce (or at least appear to be reducing) the energy component of voters' checkbooks. It's ironic that, in parts of the United States at least, energy costs for consumers are steadily coming down. But the main driver of these cost reductions is not politicians; rather, it's technology.
I cannot overestimate the impact that hydraulic fracturing and horizontal drilling is having on the global energy landscape at a critical time in history. Certainly over the last decade, and especially over the last several years, a confluence of events has tilted the balance of power eastward. China's rapidly growing demand for energy products (from crude oil and natural gas to coal) and the Middle East's growing production capacity, made the relationship between Asian countries and Middle Eastern producers the most dominant one in the global energy landscape.
Enter horizontal drilling. As this technology was perfected and implemented in the hills of the Dakotas, its potential wasn't clearly seized at first. Sure, the original developers displayed real excitement that they would be able to recover additional resources that they otherwise wouldn't have been able to, but even they didn't truly comprehend the global significance and impact this technology would have.
A New Global Energy Matrix
The way I think of this new technological development is like drinking a milkshake. Imagine that every time you drink your favorite milkshake, your straw clogs up and you can only drink half of your beverage. Now, you discover a new straw, and all of a sudden you're able to drink 100% of your milkshake. This new technological development does exactly that -- it allows companies to recover up to 50% (and in some cases, even more) of the previously unrecoverable oil in reserves.
As a result of implementing this technology throughout the country, the United States has now drastically reduced its imported oil. Countries such as Nigeria and Angola, which were prolific exporters to the U.S., all of a sudden are finding themselves with extra product and are looking for customers in other locations. Even more so, the production coming out of the U.S. is so prolific that there are even talks that the U.S. may become a net exporter by 2020. This development has caught the eyes of OPEC, the influence-wielding organization that's responsible for producing and allocating close to two-thirds of the world's daily oil production and that serves as the de facto central bank of the oil markets.
What's worrying to OPEC is not that the U.S. is becoming a large producer (although that is cause for concern); the deep-seated concern is that this technology will be exported and adopted by other countries around the world, which will glut the market with oil and depress prices. To be sure, OPEC still accounts for the majority of oil barrels produced and consumed in global markets on a daily basis. In addition, implementing this technology to aging fields or to newer fields is costly and extremely time-consuming: It can take between three to five years for the technology to be implemented appropriately. That said, this is a real change that will have real impacts in the years to come. Below I highlight some strategies you should consider in helping you benefit from this trend.
The Trend Is Your Friend
This technological trend is here to stay, and companies that implement it successfully within the constraints of environmental protections and with a global footprint certainly stand to benefit. I recommend identifying companies in the services sector that are experts in this technology and that will adopt it for their own benefit as well as third-party service providers.
One company I recommend is Anadarko Petroleum Corporation (APC). Anadarko is a global E&P company and an early adopter of the technology. It owns wells both in the United States as well as overseas, so you get exposure to assets around the world; since fracking will soon become a global phenomenon, having a company that can operate overseas is crucial.
Another service provider that you should take a look at is Nuverra Environmental Solutions (NES). One of the main challenges of fracturing is disposing of the solid waste and residue that's left after the fracturing operation, which can have a detrimental impact on the environment if not disposed of appropriately. Nuverra provides environmental and cleanup solutions to energy and industrial clients that use fracturing. As the practice becomes more commonplace, companies such as Nuverra should see demand for their services increase.
The new energy landscape is rapidly changing and will offer opportunities for investors who are able to spot trends quickly and capitalize on them.

The number of workers who suffered cancer-inducing radiation doses is not 178, but 1,978, Asahi Shimbun reported on Friday. That's eleven times more than admitted by Tepco, the owner of the plant last December.
After much international pressure, Tepco had collected data from 522 workers last December and announced that 178 of them had suffered radiation as high as 11,800 millisieverts . The safe limit is 100 millisieverts. This finding was submitted to the World Health Organization and revealed last December.
But several expert agencies including the UN Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation and Japan's health ministry pressured Tepco to look more carefully . After revaluation, Tepco found that actually 1,978 workers had suffered radiation over the safe level.
Since most of the exposure must have occurred in the first few days of the disaster, the workers have been without treatment for 28 months now. The Japanese mass circulation daily quoted affected workers as saying that they had been given no information or warning by Tepco.
Tepco reacted to Asahi Shibun's revelation by announcing , "We will provide and pay for annual, ultrasound thyroid gland tests to all workers with thyroid gland doses in excess of 100 millisieverts over their lifetimes," the paper said.
A total of 19,592 workers have worked at the stricken plant since the disaster, of which 16302 worked under contractors and sub-contractors . Very shaky records of radiation testing and results have been maintained.
The Fukushima plant continues to leak radiation in the sea and the groundwater and Tepco, which is now partially state controlled after a bailout appears to have no clue as to what is happening.
On July 8, levels of radioactive cesium in groundwater soared 90 times what they were a few days earlier and 200 times the safety limit. Earlier, in June, Tepco had admitted that radioactive strontium levels in groundwater had increased 100 times between December and May.
Tepco also admitted that radioactive tritium levels in sea water had risen to 2300 becquerels per liter ? the highest ever.
Regular reports of sea fish containing very high radioactivity have kept appearing in Japanese press indicating that somewhere radioactive water is leaking into the sea. In early July, a sea bass containing 1037 becquerels per kilogram was caught near Hitachi , about a 100 kilometers south of Fukushima.
In March this year a greenling with 740,000 becquerels per kilogram of radioactivity was caught near the plant.
Tepco is cooling the simmering spent fuel pools and damaged reactors containing highly reactive fissile material with 400 metric tons of water every day. This water gets contaminated and is being stored in huge tanks in the plant.
There have been reports of leakage from these tanks too. Tepco is reported to be trying to convince the government to allow it to dump the radioactive water in the Pacific Ocean.
"Who could trust such a company?" said Hirohiko Izumida , governor of Niigata Prefecture, according to Asahi Shimbun, after TEPCO's board decided on July 2 to restart two reactors at the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa power plant in Niigata.

Summer League Stats: 18 points, 4.2 rebounds, 2.2 assists
When the Los Angeles Clippers selected Reggie Bullock 25th overall on draft night, it seemed plausible that the North Carolina product could find himself in the rotation as soon as his rookie season began.
After watching him through five games of Las Vegas Summer League action, there's even more reason to believe that Bullock will be contributing early for one of the premier teams in the Western Conference.?
At 6'7" and a solid 200 pounds, Bullock is one of the bigger perimeter players competing in summer league. He's used that size and strength to shoot 42.3 percent over five games while averaging 18 points.?
What's most impressive about his scoring production, however, is that Bullock has consistently averaged those 18 points on a nightly basis. Meaning, he's scored at least that many in four of his five contests while posting a summer-league high of 22.?
His effectiveness from three-point range could certainly stand to improve,?while shooting?only 28.2 percent from long-range,?but the body of work we've seen from Bullock thus far has been nothing short of a net positive for Los Angeles.?

Pacific Links Hawai?i is giving kama??ina golf enthusiasts something new to cheer about ? the company announced today that it has launched a Golf O?ahu Kama??ina Rewards program, providing golfers with savings and benefits at their golf courses on O?ahu .
?We?re pleased to launch the new Pacific Links Golf O?ahu program, which will allow local golfers to tee-off at all four of our courses in Hawai?i and enjoy a significant savings,? said Micah Kane, chief operating officer of Pacific Links Hawai?i. ?Whether you play twice a week or twice a month, the Golf O?ahu program provides priority access to a growing portfolio of courses on O?ahu and includes driving range and practice facility usage; for those who love golf ? it?s a great way to get outdoors and ?m?lama i kou ola kino? ? be good to yourself.?
Participating courses on O?ahu include Kapolei Golf Club, Royal Hawaiian Golf Club, Olomana Golf Links and Makaha Valley Country Club (East), with added benefits at Makaha Golf Club (West) which is currently under construction. Program participants will enjoy protected and preferred tee times and receive exclusive invitations to Pacific Links Hawai?i clinics and social events.
Kapolei Golf Club, a former sugar plantation, is now the sweet spot for the Pacific Links Hawai?i Championship and one of O?ahu?s premier courses. Designed by famed architect Ted Robinson, Kapolei Golf Club is known for its strategic holes; the 80 bunkers and five lakes provide delightful, tactical challenges. It is rated 4.5 out of five stars on Golf Digest?s Places to Play listing and earned the Honolulu Star-Advertiser?s People?s Choice Award as ?Best Course on O?ahu? in 2010.
Royal Hawaiian Golf Club, located at the foot of O?ahu?s magnificent Ko?olau Mountains, was designed by legendary Pete Dye and son Perry, who integrated crafty golf holes into the tumbling terrain that is framed by ancient jungle trees upwards of 100 feet tall. With the course?s natural beauty and recent $3 million renovation, golfers here have a hard time keeping their eye on the ball.
Olomana Golf Links takes golfers through 18 holes of spectacular vistas and tropical breezes amidst a breathtaking backdrop of the Ko?olau Mountain Range. The par-72 course is diverse with two distinctly different nines, an 8,500 square-foot practice green and a 42-tee double-decker driving range. It is home to the Casey Nakama Golf Development Center and a thriving junior golf program.
?
Located at the base of the Waianae mountain range, Makaha Valley Country Club (East) delivers panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean and a golfing experience that is not to be missed. The par-72 course was designed by golf course architect William F. Bell and presents golfers with a variety of doglegs and elevation changes. Tree-lined fairways and rolling greens lead to an entertaining climax on one of Hawaii's most demanding closing holes. Golfers will take in the ?Makaha state of mind? as they step back in time and experience the rugged splendor of this culturally rich valley.
Some of the benefits of joining the Golf O?ahu program include:
Monthly fees for the entire family are set at $60.00 which equals the saving of a single family foursome. For more information on joining Pacific Links Golf O?ahu program, please contact Jennifer Fairbank at the Pacific Links Hawai?i office at (808) 738-9203 or email jfairbank@pacificlinks.com.
The company is also making strides with the PGA, hosting the second annual Pacific Links Hawai?i Championship from September 16 - 22, 2013 at Kapolei Golf Club. The championship will feature top Champions Tour players, signature sponsor events, local promotions and live Golf Channel coverage worldwide. All proceeds from this event will go to the Pacific Links Hawai?i Foundation ? a non-profit that helps to cultivate and sustain programs aiding Hawai'i?s ecosystem, keiki, and culture. Going beyond the green, the Pacific Links Hawai?i Foundation utilizes the sport of golf to link communities in need with business organizations, creating new opportunities for kama??ina and shaping a stronger society for all. Last year, the Pacific Links Hawai?i Championship raised $100,000 for non-profit organizations serving O?ahu?s Leeward coast.

While many examined the financials in Google?s most recently quarterly results on Thursday, the Android activation figures are also worth a look. Android adoption has enjoyed stellar growth for some time, having surpassed Apple?s iPhone, and it is still growing. The growth rate, however, is now completely flat based on the numbers Google provided on Thursday and compared to prior figures earlier this year. What?s up?
First, let?s take a look back to see how Android has grown through 2012:
So has 2013 been kind to Android? Not nearly as much.
Google Chairman, Eric Schmidt, said in April, 2013 that Android activations were 1.5 million per day. That?s a noticeable slowdown in growth from seven months prior. Schmidt also said 750 million cumulative devices were activated. Not too bad.
One month later, Google shared Android figures at its Google I/O developer event. The numbers: 900 cumulative activations. 150 million in 30 days is pretty good: That?s actually 5 million per day. But Google didn?t report the 5 million number at I/O; I simply did the math, making me wonder if the prior cumulative activation figures were too low.
This brings us back to current day: Google just reported data from the quarter ending June 30, or 45 days since it?s last activation update. Here are the figures:?900 million cumulative Android activations and 1.5 million more per day.?In other words: the growth rate is completely flat now.
What happened to Android?s upward momentum? Granted, 1.5 million new Android devices in use each day is still a huge number. But that number hasn?t seemed to grow much since last September. It works out to 15.38 percent growth in daily activations over 9 months, which isn?t much and surely a much slower rate of growth over prior time periods.
If I had to hazard a guess, I?d say that Android itself is actually growing more than Google Android. What I mean is: Anyone can use Android to build a device, but it can?t use Google?s Android apps and services without licensing them from Google. That means an Android device that doesn?t interact with Google will never be activated by Google and won?t count in the data.
Device makers in Asia have been using Android for a few years without Google?s services. So, too, does Amazon with its Kindle tablet family: Buying and using a Kindle slate doesn?t count in Google?s figures for this reason.
My gut says that with the bigger smartphone growth in China, India and other regions, consumers are buying Android devices without Google services. And not a single one of those directly benefits Google in any way, shape or form: No licensing fees, no data gathered from Google accounts and no revenue from sales in Google Play. Competition from other smartphone platforms is likely playing a part as well, but I think the non-Google Androids are having the bigger impact.
There?s no doubt that Google Android is big and still growing. With Android freely available without Google?s services, however, Android itself could be even bigger.

A bachelor, his buddies and a lot of booze in Las Vegas sounds like the recipe for more than one movie out of Hollywood ? most notably "The Hangover" trilogy. Age the guys a couple (three? four?) decades, and you've got the twist that is "Last Vegas."
A new extended trailer for the film, starring Michael Douglas, Morgan Freeman, Robert De Niro and Kevin Kline, was making the rounds on Thursday, and only needed Zach Galifianakis and a tiger to feel even more familiar.
But it's the kind of trailer that might make your dad sit up straight in his recliner, especially if he was checking the newspaper for showtimes for "Red 2."
Douglas, apparently still finding work in Vegas following his turn as Liberace in "Behind the Candelabra," stars as Billy, an older guy who's about to marry a woman who is "almost 32." Freeman (Archie), De Niro (Paddy) and Kline (Sam) are his childhood buddies, who join him in Sin City to "party like it's 1959."
Cue the slow motion shot of the four dudes walking side by side (as Redfoo's "Bring out the Bottles" blares), throw in some young ladies, add young guy Jerry Ferrara (Turtle from "Entourage") getting punched out and you're almost there. All that's left is for the guys to wake up with nasty hangovers.
"Ohhhhh," Kline moans.
Well said. "Last Vegas" opens in theaters Nov. 1.

Take a look at your Android phone. See that background shot? It's probably kind of cute, but hardly inspiring. In fact, is is bringing you any joy whatsoever? Is it helping you to make rent? Believe it or not, there's now an app for that. Locket has just launched into the Google Play Store, enabling a limited (for now) selection of advertisers to place ads on your lock screen and then paying you one cent for each time you unlock. Of course, it's capped at $0.03 per hour (so every other unlock is just making the company money), and you'll be allowed to cash out, toss the funds on a gift card or donate your earnings to a charity. Don't worry, we already did the math -- you can earn $262.80 by unlocking your phone's screen three times a day, 24 hours per day, 365 days per year. Or you can just mow some grass.

When the winds grow strong and the waves heavy, shorelines are proving to be an important shield from the damage these coastal storms can inflect. That?s according to a new study by a group of scientists at the Stanford Woods Institute for the Environment.?They have drafted a map of America?s shoreline that shows the amount of protection coral reefs, sea grasses, mangroves and sand dunes provide.
The map shows the amount of protection color. Blue means the most protection, or lowest hazard. Yellow means a medium hazard, and red means the highest risk or least protection.
According to their press release, the study (and map) are also proof of the need to protect these natural barriers. ?As a nation, we should be investing in nature to protect our coastal communities,? said?Mary Ruckelshaus, managing director of the Natural Capital Project and Woods consulting professor. ?The number of people, poor families, elderly and total value of residential property that are most exposed to hazards can be reduced by half if existing coastal habitats remain fully intact.?
So if you live near the coast, and about 40% of the country?s population does, take a close look at this map and check out .

The protest is planned for Aug. 1 at 8:00 a.m.
"The Lord Jesus Christ said marriage is between 1 man and 1 woman for life," the church said in a statement. "This stupid country thinks it can, by popular vote, and a ruling by the Godless United States Supreme Court overrule Jesus Christ when it comes to fag marriage. How stupid is that?"
Additional protests are planned in Providence and Pawtucket.

Hot on the heels of the recent iOS and Android overhaul of OneNote comes an update for the Windows 8 and Windows RT versions which adds Office 365 integration and touch keyboard improvements. The app is available in the Windows Store right now and lets you sign into your Office 365 school or work account and sync notebooks right from within the OneNote app. As for the touch keyboard, it's both invoked and dismissed by simply tapping into any empty space, which makes it easier to use. This allows you to switch seamlessly between inputting text and finger painting -- or basically, just focus on your notes. Hit the source link below for the update.
